... Why We Like Karate ...

Our experience with karate began in 2001. Through my daughter's soccer team, we met a family and became fast friends with them. Three of the four family members, the parents and a son, were involved in learning karate. My husband and I soon decided that we wanted to learn this, too. So, we joined their dojo and began attending classes 2-3 times weekly. After about two or three months, I decided that karate just wasn't my cup of tea. I'm too much of a perfectionist and found myself frustrated with learning the various moves and trying to do them properly each time. My husband has a totally different personality than I do and he has gone on to earn his black belt (June 2006).

My children were required to join karate by the age of 10. Being homeschooled, they don't have access to team sports and we wanted them to understand the discipline involved in a long-term process of learning something. Both children understand that they have NO option whatsoever regarding learning karate. I have seen a lot of character-building as they progress through the various belt levels and the children do not complain or get frustrated as they are learning all of the intricate moves, katas, etc. I would definitely recommend karate for children on the autism and/or ADD/ADHD spectrum. It has been a wonderful activity choice for our son who has Asperger's.

My husband now helps teach karate classes at our local fitness center. In June 2007, he will test to earn the title of "sensei," or "teacher." My daughter will be testing soon for a belt level change as well as for the title of "senpai," or "teacher's assistant." She helps my husband teach the classes to the children at the fitness center and sometimes even helps in the adult class! Not bad for a 13-year old!

I have many roles in our dojo - cheerleader, photographer, helper, psychologist (LOL!), and so on. Even though I am not a student of karate, it is important for me to support my family and the other members of our dojo. I am their biggest fan and I talk up our dojo to anyone who will listen as we have a wonderful family-oriented group. While emphasis is on learning the correct forms for the punches, kicks, katas, etc., our teaching team doesn't believe in yelling at students or berating and embarrassing them in front of others to get them to learn the various techniques. Teaching is done with respect for the student and true interest in helping each and every student reach their highest potential. I am so proud to be associated with our dojo!

It is my hope that you will find something useful here on my site!
I currently enjoy the privilege of being able to stay at home
to homeschool my children and I am always striving to be
the best caretaker for my precious family.
