This article from The Homeschool Mom.com explains very thoroughly what a unit study is and does. This is what the beginning of the article states, "Unit studies, sometimes called thematic units or integrated studies, are very popular with homeschoolers. Unit studies usually use a hands-on approach for effective learning. The child learns by actually experiencing or discovering through different methods and activities, rather than just reading a chapter from a textbook. Studies show that children using unit-study methods retain 45% more than those using a traditional approach." Go to the link above to read more!

Unit Study Curriculum

Amanda Bennett's Unit Studies - Lots of topics to choose from

Cadron Creek Unit Studies - home of the Prairie Primer (studies the Little House on the Prairie Series), Further Up and Further In (study of the Chronicles of Narnia series and Where the Brook and River Meets (studies the Victorian Era using Anne of Green Gables) - not secular.

Christian Cottage Unit Studies - IMHO, these are similar to Tapestry of Grace in the way they are laid out, but less academic and more hands-on. The best thing about them are the projects, games, recipes, and other hands-on activities in each study.

The Classics Unit Studies by Helping Hand.
THE HELPING HAND, 972-681-5161, (orders 800-460-7171) 5006 Barcelona Drive, Garland, TX 75043, Publish "The Classics" a unit study curriculum designed for Gr3-6 based on childrens classic literature. Write for scope and sequence and lesson samples.

Draw-Write-Now is a wonderful method to introduce your child to art while also giving them good information and a handwriting program (if needed!). Although not a complete Unit Study, these books will enhance your Am. History study or your geography or science curriculum! From the website, "Our books, Draw Write Now, are unit studies that integrate handwriting, history, science, social studies and geography with a flexible language arts exercise. The lessons may be used to introduce letter formation or encourage careful handwriting practice. They can be used as a prompt for creative writing, grammar, or speaking exercises. The lessons may be adjusted for any age, but are created for children ages five to twelve."

Five in a Row - has several different studies for ages 2-12+. Uses literature to teach social studies, science, geography, language, art and applied math. Bible supplement is extra.

Geography Unit Studies by GeoMatters - includes Galloping the Globe, Cantering the Country, and their Trail Guides series.

Kim Sutter Unit Studies are available through ROCKSolid,Inc.com

KONOS Unit Study - one of the original unit studies! They have a high school program as well. (not secular)

Learning Adventures - Unit study approach; Volume available so far include  A WORLD OF ADVENTURE which covers Ancient Egypt through the Age of Exploration (approx. 2300 B.C. to A.D. 1600) and A NEW WORLD OF ADVENTURE which covers the years 1600-1800. The remaining three books in the Learning Adventures series will cover the following periods:
WESTWARD AND ONWARD (Book 3) - 1800-1860
A NATION TORN AND MENDED (Book 4) - 1860-1900
ADVENTURES IN A MODERN WORLD   (Book 5) - The 20th century (not secular)

Learning Through History - This is NOT a curriculum exactly. It's a wonderful magazine which you could use as the basis for creating your own history unit study! From the website, "In each issue, we showcase a new historical theme, ranging from Ancient Egypt to Medieval Times to the Victorian Era to the Great Depression and beyond. All material in an issue relates to the title theme - so you can tie your history, literature and arts together easily." This is a website every homeschooling family should check out!

Lessons from History - Lessons From History is a tool to organize your study of history through biographies. Teaching history is a wonderful way to introduce our children to the ways, laws and plans of God. By taking a period and studying all the aspects of life (church, art, music, science, politics, industry, etc) you can understand why things happened the way they did. Lessons From History organizes a time period around a person or event, and provides a biography list. Handy book lists, hands-on projects, discussion questions, etc. make this a complete program, plus it is affordable. There is also a supplement called The Art Part which includes projects to accompany the units of history.

Listen, My Son - available here are Builder's Books. A four year high school unit study for boys based on Proverbs 3. It consists of 16 units, and the course of study uses primarily biographies and quality literature. For the college bound, foreign language and higher sciences will be needed, but for others, the program provides a complete high school education in Bible/character, English, history/social studies, general science, and electives such as family life, home maintenance, art/music appreciation, and creative arts. Math text must be added.

Night Owl Creations Unit Studies - There are 15 units available at this time, each with clear objectives for grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. The units integrate history, science, geography, literature, art, creative writing, and music all presented from a Christian worldview.

Out Of Every Nation - Out of Every Nation gathers true accounts of Christians from ancient to modern times in every nation of the world into a curriculum with the literature and unit study approach for homeschooling and Christian Education. Info from a poster on one of my Yahoo Groups had this to say, "They are a literature-based curriculum provider that focuses on geography. Each yearly curriculum that they sell focuses on a major part of the world, but you can also buy mini units on particular countries, usually for around $30.00 or so. You get a mini teacher's manual with a list of activities and reading and discussion topics etc, plus a stack of books."

Portraits of American Girlhood Unit Study (Grades 2-5). This is a 250+ page unit study guide that uses the American Girl historical book series by Pleasant Company. (The study is designed to last either one traditional 36-week school schedule using six of the seven units included, or a year-round 42-week schedule using all seven units. The study guide is written from a Christian/creationist perspective.

Stewardship Unit Study Guides - inexpensive guides to help you teach separate history topics in about 4 weeks

Tapestry of Grace - our current favorite program! This is a unit study which covers History in a 4-year rotation for K-12. There is more information about how we use this curriculum on the other History page. (not secular)

TRISMS - uses the research method of teaching history homeschool curriculum for middle and high school ages. You just need to add math and go!

Units Unique - Uses the American Girl series books as the basis for the study
