Before you begin doing ANYTHING to do with timelines, you should check out the following webpage Timeline info by Paula. She has anything and everything you need to know about making and using timelines!

I must give credit to the first website that I visited which gave me ideas for how to create by own timeline book. However, I didn't want our timelines to be placed in a bound book, but wanted the freedom to add paper or take out a page with errors on it! I will be adding pictures of our timeline book in the near future, so check back for those! It will really help you see what I am describing below.

We purchased 3-inch D-ring binders. I created my own template which I copied onto white cardstock on both sides. You can start off with any number of pages and add as you go. I made time divisions by writing the time periods on different colors of paper and placing the paper into a page protector. This will protect the "tabs" and helps them stick out for quick access. The divisions I used are:

Creation and Prehistory

Ancient Civilizations - 50 years/page beginning with 3500BC

The Classical World - 50 years/page beginning with 500BC

The Middle Ages - 50 years/page beginning with 400AD

Renaissance and Reformation - 5 years/page beginning with 1450AD

Exploration and Colonization - 5 years/page beginning with 1610AD

Revolutionary War to the Industrial Revolution - 5 years/page beginning with 1750AD

The World Wars - 5 years/page beginning with 1910AD

After the Wars - 5 years/page beginning with 1950AD

TIP: Have your children save their mapwork near the correct date on the timeline. My kids love to look at the maps that they have colored over the years as we've gone through our history studies.

Timeline Figures

I fell in love with the Timeline Figures from History Through the Ages, but hesitated ordering them for the longest time. I finally broke down and purchased them a few weeks ago. I absolutely love them! I wanted to copy them onto full-sheet label paper, but I also wanted to reduce them so that the kids can fit more figures into their books. I found labels CHEAP at Shopping Headquarters - these are the White Labels with Diagonal Slits - 8.5" x 11" - I purchased 200 of them. The shipping was free and they arrived 24 hours after I placed the order!

I reduced the figures to 70% and made copies of each set of timeline figures. I then cut and pasted the figures so that the entire page was full because I really didn't want to waste all of that label paper! I then copied them onto the label paper and it took 99 sheets to copy the following sets: Resurrection to Revolution, Napoleon to Now and America's History. I'll purchase the Creation to Christ figures soon to complete the collection.

TIP: These figures can be colored with pencils and Prismacolor pencils are recommended. However, in reducing them, I think it will be a little difficult to color them! I may just have the children decorate each figure with a border. I purchased my Prismacolor pencils at deep discount off of eBay using the "Buy it Now" feature.

Making a Wall Timeline

If you would like to begin making a wall timeline, check out this website for some wonderful ideas! I do intend on having the children create a wall timeline after we have finished cycling through history completely the first time. They will be working on this wall timeline during their middle school and high school years. I would like to create a "worldview" type of timeline. What I would do is assign each continent or land area with their own color and make a horizontal line across a wall for each land area. Then I would mark time periods going vertically down the wall. This way we would be able to see what is going on in Europe and North America at the same time. The Genevieve Foster books will really help us with this type of timeline!
