2005-6 Curriculum

View my SOTW/TOG/Hakim Schedule here!

On this page, I will share with you what I'll be using with my 4th and 6th grader beginning in July 2005. First, let me explain that we school year-round with small breaks here and there. We usually begin school in mid-July, and take 2-week breaks in the fall and spring, a 3-week break around Christmas and a 4 week break in June/July. We also do not school on birthdays or on days that dad is home from work. We school heavier from Monday-Thursday and leave Friday as an evaluation day aiming to be done by noon.

USING WITH BOTH CHILDREN - please NOTE: We are NOT doing each subject every day and I know that some of the "extras" will get left behind, but if I don't even TRY to schedule them, then they *never* get done at all;

History: Story of the World, Volume 3: Early Modern Times (From Elizabeth the First to the Forty-Niners) - this will also cover geography, reading comprehension, vocabulary and literature; Supplementing with Tapestry of Grace and various activity books

World Cultures/Geography: Evan Moor Geography Units and the Eastern Hemisphere study by Christian Cottage Unit Studies. I wanted a secular approach to teaching about World Cultures as well as lots of activities, recipes and great background information on these cultures. Christian Cottage isn't secular, but it isn't "religion-heavy" so I won't have to do a lot of adapting to teach the material.

Ok, I keep changing my mind on how to cover History and Geography in the next 3 years (my daughter's middle school years) and I think that I've finally stumbled on a solution that will cover all I want to cover as well as keeping the study interesting and fun. I have decided to alternate History studies with World Culture/Geography studies. In addition, a poster on one of my Yahoo Groups shared how her family covers one subject daily and I really, really liked this idea! It will solve a lot of the problems I have with switching subjects often with my ADHD child. Here's my plan:

Daily - math, Latin, piano practice, read-alouds, writing (in daily studies), Literature reading (usually before bed), exercise

Monday and Tuesday - History or Geography study (projects, timeline, reading, mapwork, character reports, etc.)
Wednesday - co-op, 4H, Fine Arts (classical music study, Art History, etc.)
Thursday - Language Arts and probably finishing up some Fine Arts
Friday - 1st hour: discuss Literature and review History, Science reading and experiments ... be done by noon

Weekend - drawing with Dad, define vocabulary from TOG

Our planned units of study will take about 6 weeks each and can be modified to take more or less time as needed. The topics we will cover next year will be as follows:

Early Am. History Review using SOTW, Vol. 3
Napoleon, Thomas Jefferson, Industrial Revolution
Australia
Lewis and Clark
South America
Pioneers/Gold Rush
Underground Railroad/Civil War/Abraham Lincoln

I have typed up a 3-year schedule which lines up Story of the World, Vol. 3 & 4, Tapestry of Grace, Years 3 & 4 and Joy Hakim's series History of US. If you would like to view this line-up as an Excel document, click here .... or to view it as a webpage, click here.
