Hold That Thought - Notebooking materials that leave lasting impressions!
I have to admit that I'm not a very creative, hands-on type of person. While I do love scrapbooking and am a beginning knitter, I have a difficult time coming up with ways to make our studies come alive. My neighbor introduced the idea of lapbooks to me several years ago and my children have enjoyed (for the most part!) putting together folders of their work. I have saved all of their lapbooks and they will pull them off of the shelf now and then and review the material and comment on what they did several years ago. I think the first place to start is to view or purchase the Dinah Zike books - The Big Book of Books and Activities -- An Illustrated Guide for Teachers, Parents and Anyone Who Works with Kids! and The Big Book of Projects -- How to design, develop, & make projects, from kindergarten through college. These books and the videos that accompany them are fabulous for giving ideas on how to organize material that the kids are learning. I purchased by books and videos through ROCK Solid, Inc. These books cannot be purchased new at a discount, but ROCK Solid gives you a FREE pack of paper when you order these items! Now, I will be adding pictures of some of our lapbooks/folders in the very near future to give you an idea of what we do. However, I will list some of the items that we put in our folders - maps, vocabulary lists, coloring pages, Q&A "lift-the-flap" books, biography sheets, comparison charts, etc. There are endless possibilities to what activities you can have your children use to remember their studies!
Activity and Project Books
Often, I use a spine book to help me with projects and activities.
Draw-Write-Now is a wonderful method to introduce your child to art while also giving them good information and a handwriting program (if needed!). From the website, "Our books, Draw Write Now, are unit studies that integrate handwriting, history, science, social studies and geography with a flexible language arts exercise. The lessons may be used to introduce letter formation or encourage careful handwriting practice. They can be used as a prompt for creative writing, grammar, or speaking exercises. The lessons may be adjusted for any age, but are created for children ages five to twelve."
The History Pockets books are FABULOUS!! You can purchase them directly from Evan-Moor or from Amazon.com. With these books, you just copy the pages and go!
There is also a Hands-On History series from Scholastic. Now, some of these are "copy and go" while others just give ideas and you have to provide the materials for the activities.
Some other books to help you with hands-on ideas include:
books by Susan Purdy called "Civilization Project Books"
The Spend the Day in ..." series by Linda Honan.
the series by Laurie Carlson
the Kaleidoscope Kids series, the "21 Activities" series by Janis Herbert and Richard Panchyk
the "History Days" series by David C. King.
