I think this section of my site is going to be the one where I share the most about myself. If I had the time and money, I'd probably go back to college and get a degree so that I could be a licensed nutritionist. Because of the fact that I have to deal with insulin resistance and PCOS, I have read soooooo many books on nutrition and dieting. In the process, I have learned so much about what our bodies need to keep it healthy. I will use this page (it will probably end up being pageS!) to share all that I have learned over the last five years or so that I have been trying to lose weight. I have succeeded in losing as much as 30 lbs., but have gained about 10 of that back and am once again working to get them off. As of 6/25/06, I weigh 152 lbs. and would like to be a firm, tone 135-140. Muscle weighs more than fat, so I'm not really using the scale as a measure of my fitness. The way my clothes fit is a better guage of how fit I am. Maybe when the kids are gone, I'll go back and get that degree and help others get fit! In the meantime, I'll keep reading and researching what I can so that I can do my best to keep myself and my family healthy.
If I have learned anything over the last few years, it is that our society needs to return to eating more whole foods. We need to get rid of the sugar in our diet, add in more healthy fats and eat more fresh produce ... and, of course, we need to exercise more. We have become a "fast food" nation and that's not good either - the ability to "supersize" a meal often means we are consuming the amount of calores in ONE meal that we should be eating throughout an entire DAY!! That's very scary to me. I remember the day, a few years ago, that I ordered a large Blizzard from Dairy Queen, ate it and then walked over to the nutrition chart hanging on the wall (it was the first one I'd ever seen in a Dairy Queen!). I was appalled to learn that I had just ingested over 1,000 calories in that ONE Blizzard ... YIKES! No wonder I couldn't lose weight when I was eating like this on occasion. Portion size is another issue that needs to be dealt with. I have found this chart very helpful in guiding my portion sizes. It takes everyday objects and relates them to food portions - print it out and post it on your fridge so that all of your family members can learn how much food they should be eating.
We can learn to take better care of ourselves if we truly want to. I want to live to be active with my grandkids and able to enjoy my husband's retirement years with him. He is an active and naturally fit person and I want to be right there with him in whatever he is doing. If I do not take care of myself now, then I won't have a future to look forward to.

It is my hope that you will find something useful here on my site! I currently enjoy the privilege of being able to stay at home to homeschool my children and I am always striving to be the best caretaker for my precious family.
